A Heartwarming Theatrical Journey from Musikal Keluarga Cemara

On Wednesday, June 19th, Ciputra Artpreneur was abuzz with excitement as it hosted the gala night for Musikal Keluarga Cemara (“Cemara Family the Musical”), ahead of its grand opening on June 21st. This captivating musical, a collaboration between Visinema, Indonesia Kaya, and TEMAN, reimagines the cherished Indonesian family saga of Keluarga Cemara for the stage. Set to run from June 21st to July 15th, with 30 performances over 25 days, it promises to be one of the most enduring shows in recent years.

Musikal Keluarga Cemara is Visinema's landmark project, marking their debut in stage musicals. The production, led by producers Cristian Imanuell, Billy Gamaliel, and Chriskevin Adefrid, with executive producers Anggia Kharisma and Herry B. Salim, brings a beloved narrative to life. Ifa Fachir and Simhala Avadana's musical compositions enrich the adaptation by Yemima Krisantina and Widya Arifianti, under the direction of the seasoned Pasha Prakasa.

The narrative follows the enduring struggles of the Cemara family—parents Abah and Emak, and their daughters Euis and Ara. The story swiftly transitions from Abah’s youthful protests against rising prices to his romantic courtship with Emak, their marriage, and the birth of Euis. Abah's sudden job loss and the family's relocation to a rural ancestral home disrupt Euis's 13th birthday celebration in the present day. The ensuing challenges, from financial woes to emotional adjustments, resonate deeply with the audience, evoking a spectrum of emotions.

The production's ambition to introduce musical theatre to new audiences is evident. The set design, primarily static, features a striking two-story house and an adjacent taller structure, both meticulously detailed and visually enchanting. Reminiscent knick-knacks and toys adorn the proscenium, contributing to the show's charm. The characters' costumes are a feast for the eyes, with eclectic patterns and colours that vividly portray their personalities and affiliations. The lighting design enhances the atmospheric setting, blending colours to create textured, emotive scenes.
