Arkiv Vilmansa on Creativity, Collaboration, and Staying True

Arkiv Vilmansa, renowned artist and toy designer, reflects on his journey and collaboration with Serra Living. Known for his whimsical and imaginative creations, Vilmansa has captivated audiences worldwide. In this exclusive interview, he shares insights into his artistic process, inspirations, and the evolving landscape of Indonesian art. From his early days as a toy designer to his current collaborations with global brands, Vilmansa's career has been marked by creativity, innovation, and a passion for storytelling.

Q : Could you describe the stages involved in the Serra Living x Arkiv collaboration?

"I was personally contacted by Mr Andre Tanuwijaya, the owner of Serra Living, and our first brainstorming session happened right there and then. It turns out that Mr Andre had long been eager to incorporate and merge Arkiv's works with Serra Living's products. I thought, "Why not?" The process was incredibly enjoyable, and I already had a clear vision of what the furniture would eventually look like."

Q : Were there any challenges in merging your distinctive style with Serra Living's signature aesthetic during the collaboration?

"Not at all. Everything went smoothly because the Serra Living team gave me full creative freedom and had complete confidence in my ability to blend art with Serra Living's renowned quality."

Q : Your previous collaborations, such as with IKEA, Volkswagen, and Bathing Ape, were not small-scale projects. Did you maintain a common thread in your collaboration with Serra Living to ensure that your signature style remained evident?

"In my work, I’m always keen to express my ideas through various mediums without losing my identity as an artist. During the collaboration with Serra Living, I aimed to merge their market with mine as an artist, with the goal of creating furniture that is aesthetically unique, of high quality, and accessible to everyone."

Q : You're well-known for your work with animation, cartoons, and comics. Has this always been your hallmark, or did you discover it later in your career?

"This stems from sentimental experiences from my childhood. Mickey Mouse was my favourite cartoon character growing up—I loved the character's personality, traits, and behaviour. With a passion for drawing from a young age, cartoons became an integral part of my life. I started my career as a toy designer, learning and evolving, which eventually led me to where I am today."

Q : Do you have any words of advice for those who are just discovering their identity as an artist and are about to start creating and showcasing their work?

"I’m certain that with the ease of access today, new artists will find it easier to discover their artistic identity. However, it’s crucial not to forget the importance of consistency—continuously introducing yourself as an artist and building your personal brand through your work."
