Darbotz: Unmasking the Monster of Jakarta’s Urban Art

In the pulsating heart of Jakarta's urban art scene, few names resonate as profoundly as Darbotz. Renowned for his distinctive monochromatic style and the creation of his alter ego, Cumi Kong, Darbotz has masterfully captured the raw energy, chaos, and resilience of city life. From the now-archived Tekbokbomber.com, a pioneering platform for urban artists, to towering murals like his monumental work at Artotel Hotel Thamrin, his art bridges the personal and the public. Each stroke reflects a city that’s as challenging as it is inspiring—a space where creativity and adaptability are the keys to survival.

Q: How do your works reflect the current state of Jakarta, and how has this perspective evolved over time?

“This city is inevitably changing for better or for worse. I remember when Jakarta was much more chaotic: the streets were filled with bajaj and metromini, and there were frequent street fights. While some of these issues persist, it's fair to say that Jakarta has been moving in a more positive direction and my works will absolutely adjust then”

Q: Street art often involves an interaction with its surroundings. How does Darbotz translate the energy and atmosphere of the streets into his artwork when working on different mediums such as canvas or clothing?

“With years of experience, I believe my work is highly adaptable, capable of being applied anywhere with ease and adjusting to any medium. In fact, I often find that contrasting elements can create a more aesthetically pleasing outcome.”

Q: How do you think a platform can influence generations of artists in Indonesia’s Art Industry nowadays?

“Back then, I created a platform called "Tembokbomber" with the aim of introducing visual arts and graffiti to a wider audience. The existence of such platforms can undoubtedly help artists to expand their reach and increase their visibility within the global art community.”

Q: Urban society and its dynamics play a crucial role in your art. How do your works reflect the current state of Jakarta, and how has this perspective evolved over time?

"Urban life is always evolving, whether for better or worse. I’ve experienced Jakarta in its chaotic days, with bajaj (three-wheeled taxis), metrominis (mini buses), street brawls, and all kinds of urban disorder. While Jakarta now seems to be heading in a better direction, those elements of chaos can still be seen on its streets."

Q: Could you share a quote that best represents who 'Darbotz' is in this industry?

"Sure, it's A Monster in Disguise!"
