Traditional Meets Modern in Beijing’s Qishe Project

Located in a historic quarter of Beijing, a timeless siheyuan—an iconic courtyard residence—has been rejuvenated by Archstudio, merging traditional Chinese architecture with modern design sensibilities. The project, aptly named Qishe (combining the Chinese words for "seven" and "house"), honours its heritage while embracing the future. This residence, located at number seven in a Beijing hutong, originally comprised seven pitched-roofed buildings. However, years of neglect left the structure in disrepair, with damaged roofs, walls, and windows, and courtyards overrun by weeds and temporary structures.

Archstudio approached the restoration with two clear objectives: preserving the old while seamlessly introducing the new. By carefully repairing timber beams, arched doorways, and structural surfaces, the design team revived the authentic charm of the traditional siheyuan. Simultaneously, modern elements such as a kitchen, bathrooms, a garage, and HVAC systems were integrated to meet contemporary living standards.

A standout feature of the renovation is the addition of a veranda, a hallmark of traditional Chinese architecture, which unites the seven pitched roofs. This veranda not only serves as a functional circulation route but also reshapes the spatial experience, offering both practical connectivity and striking visual layers. Walking through this thoughtfully designed space feels both nostalgic and innovative, with scenic courtyards and playful architectural transitions that capture the essence of Beijing’s historic charm.
